It happens every four years. When we get near an election, conservatives campaign on one thing — national security. To most republicans national security must be obtained by continual war with those who merely seem to be our enemies. The cowardly idea they put forth is: “Hey, let’s not wait to find out whether or not they ARE enemies … if we feel threatened by them [even if that feeling has been engendered by carefully wrought propaganda], we should attack them — RIGHT NOW!!!” All we need is to FEEL threatened to justify our violent response. It is identical to the new laws in places like Florida. These laws make it legal to carry a concealed pistol and also to shoot anyone who we might feel threatened by. Here too, all that matters is a subjective FEELING. Whether or not someone or some country is ACTUALLY dangerous matters not. But why OH why do Republicans do this? It is very simple. If Joe-public can be made to feel threatened by some external threat (or internal threat, e.g., Gays or Obama’s pastor or illegal immigrants or liberals), imaginary or not, Joe-public will not pay attention to the fact that every conservative policy is a deliberat effort to change the rules of our society in order to take power away from the the common populace at large and hand it over to a tiny group of the wealthiest hands in the world.
This ever-present effort by the Republican party to financially disadvantage everyone but a few billionaires has another effect that is clearly intended. As the common folk have to struggle harder and harder to make ends meet, they must necessarily recede from political activity and tend to those more pressing ends. With everyone overworked and paying quadruple gas prices, they are naturally too tired to even notice what is going on — much less protest it.
Now, in the waning years of the Bush administration, after seven solid years getting passed almost every rule-change they were seeking, after clearly screwing every single person who is not a multi-billionaire, what are they doing? They are trying like hell to make us FEEL THREATENED by Iran. They’re gonna go long now, they think. This one is for ALL the marbles. It may very well throw the world into chaos, but if they can get us to feel threatened enough to at least WANT to bomb Iran it also might mean another Republican in the Presidency — and THAT chance is just wat too Hot to pass up.
The problem is the “boy who cried wolf” problem. We can’t feel threatened by your dark descriptions of Iran’s nuclear program in that low foreboding voice you adopt whenever you want to tell us a new Ghost tale, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. You’re both pretty big liars. Two of the biggest, in fact. Bush even lied about giving up Golf for the troops. I bet when you guys tell the truth, everyone thinks you’re lying because you guys lie ALL THE DAMN TIME. Is that a problem you guys have? I bet it is. So better to just lie about EVERYTHING, right? That way nothing you say seems different from the other stuff, right? Anyway, we just don’t buy it anymore. All you fools were DEAD WRONG about Iraq, so why should we believe you now about Iran? Shit, I didn’t even believe you back then!
But push they must for more war, because a Democratic President might actually put some of them in prison where they clearly belong.
I myself prefer them to stay out of prison. I want to see the different members of this criminal gang show their faces in public in a few years, after it is just SO CLEAR TO ALL how their reign was NOTHING but a giant, murderous, genocidal even, looting of our treasury. I want to see their shame in full view, not behind bars! I want to see it just beneath their refusal to admit that they even ARE ashamed. I want to see their old red faces get redder and redder and older and older and I want them to be asked every day by every person: Why did you want this country go into a war it did not need to fight? No, no jail for these guys. Only shame.
